Liquidambar

The clients wanted a garden in the classic Italian style, that would also have functional areas for eating outdoors and children’s play, and a swimming pool with pool house. Moderate formality had to be reconciled with everyday liveability, with desired features like aromatic herb and cut flower gardens laid out inside borders of square clipped box hedges and beds planted with varieties of Anemone, Astrantia, Allium, and ornamental grasses. To meet the owners’ other requests, the garden was divided into rooms: an outdoor seating area that extends the living room of the house, a comfortable outdoor eating area, and a beautiful potager. Another area is given over to arboreal peonies, while clematis and roses occupy the glass-house and pergola. The rectangular swimming pool is surrounded with pots of clipped ball Buxus sempervirens and adjoined by a pool house built by Italian artisans. The trees selected for planting were adult specimens: Cupressus, Quercus rubra, Liquidambar. The walks are paved with salvaged stones, while the central paving is in quartzite.
